On being you

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” -E.E. Cummings

It can be difficult to be true to yourself if you have no idea who you are.

So often we identify with who we’ve been in the past–holding onto bad memories and assuming they have to define us. Or we think about who we should be–things we want to have, how to we want to be perceived, and how we want to be remembered.

We attach to things and people, as if they are a part of us, and then feel disjointed when someone leaves or something changes.

Those things aren’t who we are. We are not what we own. We are not who we have been. We are not what other people judge us to be. Who we are on any given day is the result of what we choose to think and do.

Find the courage today to choose for you, no one else. Choose without stressing about what’s come and gone or worrying about what might be. Choose based on who you want to be in the world today, and then honor that choice with your actions.

What do you need to do today to be the person you want to be?

Enlightenment – The Search

Searching for Enlightenment is like searching for warm water while you are standing in warm water at a Caribbean beach.

Let’s define Enlightenment as the conscious recognition of your true Self. The One Self, the Divine Self, the Infinite Self. The Self that is One with God. You are this now. You have always been this and will always be this. So as long as you are searching you cannot find the Self. When you tire of the search and surrender out of exhaustion you will then find what you were seeking and always were to begin with. The search creates the illusion of two, the searcher and the One being searched for, when there really is only One.

There is nothing wrong with spiritual searching. It is perfectly normal. But if you are tired of searching and want, more than anything in the world, to experience Enlightenment, then this is probably a good place to relax, read, practice, listen and ask questions.

Spiritual searching can be quite addictive. It can lead us into dark corners, bright lights, ups and downs. It can be fulfilling and exhausting. Most spiritual seekers I have met over the years are quite happy searching. The prefer spending their lifetime exploring one or more spiritual paths. They would rather seek enlightenment than find it. There are many who believe that only the great gurus of India or saints of the past can attain enlightenment. There are some who believe that enlightenment leads to instant health, wealth and magical abilities. I have not found any of this to be true.

Inspirational Thought

When confusion reigns, it is easy to remember this truth: I am not my thoughts, nor my emotions, nor my sensory perceptions, nor my experiences. I am not the contents of my life. I am Life. I am the space in which everything happens. I am consciousness. I am the Present. I Am.

“You only lose what you cling to.” -Buddha

If there’s one thing we all have in common it’s that we want to feel happy; and on the other side of that coin, we want to avoid hurting. Yet we consistently put ourselves in situations that set us up for pain.

We pin our happiness to people, circumstances, and things and hold onto them for dear life. We stress about the possibility of losing them when something seems amiss. Then we melt into grief when something changes—a lay off, a break up, a transfer.

We attach to feelings as if they define us, and ironically, not just positive ones. If you’ve wallowed in regret or disappointment for years, it can seem safe and even comforting to suffer.

In trying to hold on to what’s familiar, we limit our ability to experience joy in the present. A moment can’t possibly radiate fully when you’re suffocating it in fear.

When you stop trying to grasp, own, and control the world around you, you give it the freedom to fulfill you without the power to destroy you. That’s why letting go is so important: letting go is letting happiness in.

Meditation Thought

I am existing. Go deep into this feeling. Just sitting, go deep into this feeling ― I am existing, I am. Feel it, don't think it, because you can say it in the mind ― I AM ― and it is futile. Your head is your undoing. Don’t go on repeating in the head I am, I am existing. It is futile, it is useless. You miss the point.

Feel it deep down in your bones. Feel it all over your body. Feel it as a total unit, not in the head. Just feel it ― I am. Don’t use the words “I am”.

Don’t make it a mantra, and sitting, don’t say, “I am existing.” There is no need. Everyone knows, and you know already that you are existing; there is no need, it is futile. Feel it ― I am existing. Feeling is a different thing, totally different.

Try it. And you can do it anywhere. Just riding on a bus, or traveling in a train, or just sitting, or lying down on your bed, try to feel existence as it is; don’t think about it.

When you start feeling existence, the whole world becomes alive to you in a totally new way; you have not known it. Then you pass through the same street and the street is not the same, because now you are grounded in existence. You meet the same friends but they are not the same, because you are different.

When you are rooted, you are one with the whole, and the existence exists for you. You are not a beggar; you become an emperor suddenly.

And while feeling this, don’t create a limit to it. Feel it illimitably. Don’t create a boundary to it; there is none. It ends nowhere. The world begins nowhere; the world ends nowhere. Existence has no beginning and no end. You also don’t have any beginning; you also don’t have any end.

On Being Free

“Freedom is instantaneous the moment we accept things as they are.” -Karen Maezen Miller

You can’t change the world around you by fighting it in your head. Your stress, anger, disappointment, regret, frustration, and bitterness won’t do anything to alter what is.

You are the only force that can create the change you seek, and you can only do that after you accept things as they are.

Make peace with the here and now. Let go and stop resisting. It doesn’t have to mean you’ve given up on the possibility of something better. It just means you’ve decided to pursue it from a place of freedom and peace.

Coming Soon: New Online Wisdom & Personal Leadership Mentoring

Do we need more knowledge? Is more information going to save the world, or faster computers, more scientific or intellectual analysis? Is it not wisdom that humanity needs most at this time?

But what is wisdom and where is it to be found?

After implementing all the positive reactions and feedback concerning the first generation of online Wisdom & Personal Leadership Mentoring I'm excited to let you know that we will be launching the new version next week, and I'd love to invite you to join me in this unique approach:

Online Wisdom & Personal Leadership Mentoring is about getting what you want in your life. It is about discovering "what works in creating a life of true meaning, joy, love, appreciation, creativity, kindness, generosity, hope, optimism, energy, and enthusiasm". It's designed to be fun and to challenge you.

The boundaries and limitations that we may have set for ourselves are not as real as they seem. They are simply what we have been conditioned to believing. In these Online Wisdom & Personal Leadership Mentoring sessions, you will be stretched to go beyond your ideas of what you thought was possible, and will (re-)define your vision, and be guided to bring it into fulfillment.

The program consists of a series of 6 video-email and 1 skype sessions; you will receive the sessions within 1  month; you can choose to follow them according to the proposed or according to your own schedule.

Stay tuned for the special Announcement Newsletter next week!

With best regards,

Dieter

No-Thought for the Day

With such a small life, with such a small energy source, it is simply stupid to waste it in sadness, in anger, in hatred, in jealousy. Use it in love, use it in some creative act, use it in friendship, use it in meditation: Do something with it which takes you higher. And the higher you go, the more energy sources become available to you. At the highest point of consciousness, you are almost a god.

“If we are not fully ourselves, truly in the present moment, we miss everything.” -Thich Nhat Hanh

Don’t let yourself miss a thing today. Take everything that compromises your peace of mind–worries, fears, insecurities, disagreements–and choose to let them go.

Things may not yet be addressed or resolved. People and situations may still need your attention. That’s OK–you can handle them. But you don’t need to feel tension to do it.

As the proverb goes, “Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.”

On Meditation

When you meditate, there should be no effort to control and no attempt to be peaceful. Don't be overly solemn or feel that you are taking part in some special ritual; let go even of the idea that you are meditating.
Let your body remain as it is, and your breath as you find it.

Meditation

Meditation is something that is not contrived, organized.
Meditation IS.
It begins with the first step, which is to be free of all your psychological hurts, accumulated fears, anxiety, loneliness, despair, sorrow.
That is the foundation, that is the first step, and the first step is the last step.

Think of nothing

Thinking, you are separated from existence. Thinking is not a relation, it is not a bridge, it is not a communication ? it is a barrier. Non-thinking you are related, bridged; you are in communion. When you are talking to someone, you are not related. The very talk becomes a barrier. The more you talk, the further away you move. If you are with someone in silence, you are related. If the silence is really deep and there are no thoughts in your mind and both the minds are totally silent, you are one.

Whenever you are silent with someone, you are one. When you are silent with existence, you are one with it.

This technique says be silent with existence and then you will know what God is. There is only one dialogue with existence and that is in silence. If you talk with existence, you miss. Then you are enveloped in your own thoughts.

Try this as an experiment. Try it with anything ? even with a rock. Be silent with it ? take it in your hand and be silent ? and there will be a communion. You will move deep into the rock and the rock will move deep into you. Your secrets will be revealed to the rock and the rock will reveal its secrets to you. But you cannot use language with it. The rock doesn’t know any language.

Confined in thoughts you will be in misery. Unconfined, beyond thoughts ? alert, conscious, aware, but unclouded by thoughts ? you will be joy, you will be bliss.

Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

I don’t even know what to say.

I’m not often awestruck; I’ve seen a lot, experienced much. But I am indeed awestruck.

Today’s video takes some investment from you. Not in money, but in two other infinite commodities: Time and Desire. You must be willing to take the time to watch this video in its entirety – even if it’s ten minutes a day- and you should commit to adapting what you’ve learned from it to your life. Expendables was the top movie at the box office and it simply shows people being killed. This shows how we ought to live.

This is a dying man’s last gift to the world- an enormous, moving, powerful message. You will be moved, transcended if you allow, and better for it. I had heard of this speech by a young professor who found out he was dying but I never invested the time to watch the whole thing. After five minutes of watching I knew I had to bring it to my fellow KindHearts.

Friends, start this video today and as it moves you- it will immediately- hit the LIKE button or fill out the Tell-A-Friend form. This professor, and our friends and family, deserve it. the best goal is no goal

“With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

P
ost written by Leo Babauta.

The idea of having concrete, achievable goals seem to be deeply ingrained in our culture. I know I lived with goals for many years, and in fact a big part of my writings here on Zen Habits are about how to set and achieve goals.

These days, however, I live without goals, for the most part. It’s absolutely liberating, and contrary to what you might have been taught, it absolutely doesn’t mean you stop achieving things.

It means you stop letting yourself be limited by goals.

Consider this common belief: “You’ll never get anywhere unless you know where you’re going.” This seems so common sensical, and yet it’s obviously not true if you stop to think about it. Conduct a simple experiment: go outside and walk in a random direction, and feel free to change directions randomly. After 20 minutes, an hour … you’ll be somewhere! It’s just that you didn’t know you were going to end up there.

And there’s the rub: you have to open your mind to going places you never expected to go. If you live without goals, you’ll explore new territory. You’ll learn some unexpected things. You’ll end up in surprising places. That’s the beauty of this philosophy, but it’s also a difficult transition.

Today, I live mostly without goals. Now and then I start coming up with a goal, but I’m letting them go. Living without goals hasn’t ever been an actual goal of mine … it’s just something I’m learning that I enjoy more, that is incredibly freeing, that works with the lifestyle of following my passion that I’ve developed.

The problem with goals

In the past, I’d set a goal or three for the year, and then sub-goals for each month. Then I’d figure out what action steps to take each week and each day, and try to focus my day on those steps.

Unfortunately, it never, ever works out this neatly. You all know this. You know you need to work on an action step, and you try to keep the end goal in mind to motivate yourself. But this action step might be something you dread, and so you procrastinate. You do other work, or you check email or Facebook, or you goof off.

And so your weekly goals and monthly goals get pushed back or side-tracked, and you get discouraged because you have no discipline. And goals are too hard to achieve. So now what? Well, you review your goals and reset them. You create a new set of sub-goals and action plans. You know where you’re going, because you have goals!

Of course, you don’t actually end up getting there. Sometimes you achieve the goal and then you feel amazing. But most of the time you don’t achieve them and you blame it on yourself.

Here’s the secret: the problem isn’t you, it’s the system! Goals as a system are set up for failure.

Even when you do things exactly right, it’s not ideal. Here’s why: you are extremely limited in your actions. When you don’t feel like doing something, you have to force yourself to do it. Your path is chosen, so you don’t have room to explore new territory. You have to follow the plan, even when you’re passionate about something else.

Some goal systems are more flexible, but nothing is as flexible as having no goals.

How it works

So what does a life without goals look like? In practice, it’s very different than one with goals.

Is there a way you can learn to slow down and experience yourself more fully, your life more deeply, and other people in the present moment without adopting a new religious or philosophical ideology? Clark Strand answers with a clear and simple "yes!" Short, compelling reflections show you how to make meditation a part of your daily life, without the complication of gurus, mantras, retreats, or treks to distant monasteries.

What is the proper way to breathe? Where should I meditate? What should I sit on? How often should I practice? You’ll find the answers surprising as Strand breaks down modern-day stereotypes about meditation and leaves the one thing a successful meditation practice truly needs: you.

“Happiness does not come from having much, but from being attached to little.” -Cheng Yen

You can’t hold onto this moment. You can fill with whatever you choose–people, places, things, and dreams. But the only thing that’s certain in life is that the next moment is uncertain. Sometimes it will look a lot like the one before; sometimes it will look completely different.

You can never predict what you’ll gain and lose. That doesn’t have to be frightening–not if you use this as motivation to fully experience and enjoy what’s in front of you.

Notice the joy in your day instead of dwelling on yesterday’s pain. Experience the beauty of the world around you instead of worrying it won’t be there tomorrow. Give yourself credit for all that you’ve done instead of questioning whether it’s enough. Appreciate and enjoy the people you love instead of drowning in petty dramas.

Live this moment like it’s a gift, not a given and then embrace the next one.

This moment will never come again, and it’s yours to fully enjoy.

Detach Yourself From the Body

Your body is nothing but existence come to you, existence reached to you. It is the nearest existence to you, that’s all. Your body is just the nearest corner of it, and then the whole existence is there ― it goes on spreading. Once your attachment is not there, there is no body to you; or, the whole existence has become your body. You are everywhere.

In the body you are somewhere; without the body you are everywhere. In the body you are confined to a particular space; without the body you have no confinement. That’s why those who have known, they say the body is the imprisonment. Not that the body is the imprisonment; really, the attachment to it is the imprisonment. Once your eyes are not focused on the body, you are everywhere.

Whenever the body is forgotten, it is tossed aside unknowingly, unconsciously, joy happens to you. Through Tantra and Yoga you can do it methodologically. Then it is not an accident; then you are the master of it. Then it is not happening to you; then you have the key in your hands and you can open the door whenever you want. Or, you can open the door forever and throw away the key; no need to close the door again.

Joy happens in ordinary life also, but you don’t know how it happens. The happening is always when you are not the body ― remember this. So whenever you again feel any moment of joy, become aware of whether you are the body in that moment or not. You will not be. Whenever joy is, the body is not. Not that the body disappears ― the body remains, but you are not attached to it. You are not attached to it, you are not tethered to it. You have jumped out.

You may have jumped out because of music, you may have jumped out because of a beautiful sunrise, you may have jumped out because a child was laughing, you may have jumped out because you were in love. Whatsoever the cause, but you have jumped out for a moment ― out of the body. The body is there, but tossed aside; you are not attached to it. You have taken a flight.

Through this technique, you know that one who is everywhere cannot be miserable; he is joyous, he is joy. So the more you become confined, the more miserable. Expand, push your boundaries away, and whenever you can, leave the body aside. You look in the sky and clouds are floating: move with the clouds, leave the body here on the earth. And the moon is there: move with the moon. Whenever you can forget the body, don’t miss the opportunity ― go on a journey. And then you will become accustomed to what it means to be out of the body.

To be in the body, your attention is needed to be there. So remember it ― wherever your attention is, you are there. If your attention is in the clouds, you are there. If your attention is in the flower, you are there. If your attention is in money, you are there. Your attention is your being. And if your attention is nowhere, you are everywhere.

The whole process of meditation is to be in such a state of consciousness where your attention is nowhere, there is no object to it. When there is no object to it, there is no body to you. Your attention creates the body. Your attention is your body. And when attention is nowhere, you are everywhere ― joy happens to you. It is not good to say that it happens to you ― you are it. It cannot leave you now; it is your very being.

“When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.” -Lao Tzu

Somewhere along the lines, we’ve gotten it into our heads that a full life involves abundance. We’re told to visualize it, fixate on it, and open up to receiving it because we deserve it and we can have it.

The missing part of that equation is whether or not excess will actually make us happy. The answer is no–not if you weren’t already happy–because happiness is an inside job.

Research actually shows the human brain becomes conditioned to positive experiences, meaning once the initial high of receiving wears off, your mood will return to its baseline–even if you won the lottery.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting. If the world was free from desire, there would be no positive change. What’s important is to realize you can experience peace and joy without attaching to the things you want. That there is nothing lacking in this moment that makes it unworthy of happiness.
What can you do to enjoy this moment, in all its fullness?

Still Waters

the storm has passed, there is calm and serenity once more.....
waves crash on the surface, blue grey and salty,
while deep down in the profound spaces of the ocean
within, there is a soul that surrenders and floats
in gratitude, knowing that sometime soon,
perhaps it will find itself in turbulent tempests
again, and yet, it will not matter, for what is will remain,
indestructible, unborn and undying, eternal, beyond
the coming and the going, the making and the unmaking,
of lakes, rivers and ponds, and the moon will reflect
in still waters, under a star-filled night.......

“Stress is caused by being ‘here’ but wanting to be ‘there.”‘ -Eckhart Tolle

There will always be the possibility of a tomorrow that could be better than today. Tomorrow you might be more satisfied with your work. Or maybe you’ll be more comfortable financially. Or happier in your relationship.

There’s always going to be a there that sounds like a fantasy–someday when you’ve gotten what you want.

You could easily wrap your whole life around the promise of getting there and tie your emotions to the illusion of getting closer. You could stress out if you don’t think you’re making progress or feel frustrated that you haven’t seen enough results. You could complain to people about feeling stuck and dwell on how much better things would be if only you could get there.

You could do all of that–if you want to choose unhappiness. Because this moment, right now, is your life. And where you are is where you have an opportunity to be happy. Not tomorrow, not where you’ll be then–but right now, in this time and place.

You can fight it and feel stressed or let go and feel peace.

That doesn’t mean you can’t strive for things you want. It just means you’ve realized getting where you want to be doesn’t require you to feel pain where you are.

Dig your heels in and take a deep breath. You are here. Here is your chance to find and experience joy.

I'll be happy....if only......

if only i had this,
if only i had that,
if only he's said this,
if only she'd not said that,
i wish it was different,
i wish i was elsewhere,
i wish the world was a better place,
i wish everyone would care,
i want sunshine and not rain,
i want some heat and not cold,
i want my own place in the sun,
i want as i want it to unfold,
i need more than i have now,
i need to travel and explore,
i need to learn and express,
i need to have more and more,
i'll be happy if i get a house,
i'll be happy with a new car,
i'll be happy if i find love,
i'll be happy if i become a star,
if only i was slimmer,
if only i was pretty,
if only i was clever,
if only i was witty,

if only, i wish, i need, i hope,
i want, i yearn, i long, i ache,
i'll be happy, if only, if only,
everything happened my way.....

a white cloud passing by,
got fed up with my chatter,
gave me a caress on my face,
woke me to what matters.....

right here, right now,
what is, just is,
all is perfect,
like this or like this.....

nothing to get,
nowhere to be,
to accept this "what is"

is the only key......

Judgment is ugly — it hurts people. On the one hand you go on hurting them, and wounding them, and on the other hand you want their love, their respect. It is impossible. “If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.” -Lao Tzu

You’re stuck.

We’ve all been there. Even the things that normally make you happy begin to bring you down. Worst of all, you can’t seem to understand why.

So you give it time, let it take its course, and just when you think you’ve escaped the funk, something drags you back in. You know it’s happening, but you can’t stop from slipping back under.

What’s happening here is simple. Something—be it your job, peers, or general lifestyle— is contaminating your mind. You’ve lost track of the calmness you know you possess, and it’s like your mind’s been tricked. You’re stuck in a painful and decisive delusion that causes everything to be toxic.

It’s time to wake up. Seriously, the snooze button is off-limits.

You only come to find yourself in these types of negative situations because you’ve let your mind take control. It may seem like other people and circumstances are to blame, but everyone is responsible for their own mental state. Life will never stop throwing you curve balls. The only solution is to change how you internalize and deal with them.

Since completely escaping your mind may seem a bit radical, at the very least, you must correct your thinking.

Our minds are like oceans. Like the tides, thoughts come in and then retreat back. When your mind is stuck, the ebb and flow of your thoughts are all negative. Each new thought process makes the negativity even stronger, creating a snowball effect.

Luckily there is a solution, and you innately have it.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras suggests that there is a jewel of pure consciousness within each of us that is waiting to shine through the clouded mind. By intentionally concentrating away from negativity, and instead focusing the flow of thought on something pure, that jewel will become apparent.

Even if you have to fake it at first, you can teach your mind to ignore negative thoughts. The mind works both ways; the flow of thought can be a snowball of positive energy too.

This being said, I invite you to give meditation a try, even if you think it’s not for you. Stretch a little first to loosen your muscles and connect with your body. Sit in a position that’s comfortable for you and take a few deep breaths–or as I like to say, reboot your mind.

When you reboot your mind, you are clear of the past, empty of regrets, and focused on something positive. You’re simply present, connected and peaceful in the moment.

Don’t stress if your mind starts to wander while you’re meditating. Just notice it and pull yourself back to a place of awareness. It helps to focus on a specific point or place so that your meditation practice is an active experience. This place, or the inner-jewel, varies between us all, so it is up to you to find your own. By focusing upon this inner-treasure, your mind will feel less inclined to go down a negative path.

If you find yourself struggling to find this place, meditate on the sun, moon, or water. Pretty soon, this type of meditation will teach you your own unique meditative dance. You’ll feel less easily pulled into a funk when things go wrong outside you, and positive energy will seem more natural.

By learning to live in absorption of this meditative place, you’ll help your problems slowly dissipate. Your funk will fade into a sense of peace that you can nurture every day by connecting with body and your breath.

You are loved. All is well.

We would like you to release the word "achieve" or "earn" from your vocabulary and from your understanding, altogether, and we would like you to replace those words with the word "allow". You're wanting to allow your Well-being, not achieve it. It's not something that you need to earn. All you have to do is decide what it is you would like to experience, and then allow it in order to achieve it. It isn't something you have to struggle for or try for. You are all worthy beings. You are deserving of this Well-being.

What Makes All the Difference

We cannot know how many of us are actually going to succeed in becoming enlightened in this life. We can never predict these things. But the question of how many of us are going to come to that point in our own evolution where we are willing to do anything that we possibly can in order to succeed is a very different matter. The power to go that far lies in our very own hands. And in the end, there is nothing more that any of us can do than want to be free more than anything else and be willing to back it up with action and with sacrifice. From a certain point of view, whether or not we actually succeed in becoming fully enlightened doesn't really matter. It doesn't make any difference. But what does make all the difference in the world is whether or not we are truly willing now.

Andrew Cohen
